Indiana - Margaux Litter

There were three puppies born in a litter we had on March 1, 1999. All were boys. We called them Beau, Bart, and Seven-of-Three (aka Mr. Mystic). Our big boy Indiana was the sire. Margaux was the dam.

The first day.

There were four puppies born, but only three lived. They weighed 1 lb. and 11 oz. each!

Here, the puppies are suckling at 3 days old:

Berners love to lay flat on their back with their feet in the air and will sleep like that throughout their lives.

At one week old their heads no longer look like rats’ heads, but they still have Mr. Potato Head ears.

We did not pose them for this next photo. They just lined up like this on their own.

At just over two weeks, eyes are open and pigment is filling in on their noses. We named one puppy “Bart”—he had (and still has) a Bart Simpson haircut.

One puppy was named “Seven-of-Three”. (He had a white mark on the back of his head that was shaped just like the numeral “7”—yet came from a litter of only three puppies. We got the name idea from a Star Trek show.) Seven had probably just finished feeding since his head is wet. The ears are starting to grow.

Another puppy was named “Beau”. (We’ve lost track of Beau. That last we knew, he was living in Steamboat Springs. His original owners had given him away since they wanted to travel and could not keep him any more. This was a violation of their contract with us, but we’ve never been able to find them or the dog.)

At 5-weeks, it is time to start exploring the outdoors.

At 5-weeks there is less sleep and more play!

Including, playing with Mom!

Here is Beau with his mom at about 6-weeks of age.

Rick often calls Bart “the world’s most beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog.” He has a great structure, size, head and markings. His coat is full and fluffy.

Here he is at about 6- or 7-weeks.

Here is Bart again, at about 7-weeks.

How many real pups are in this photo?

Seven-of-Nine, renamed Mr. Mystic, moved to Sheridan, Wyoming where he lives with a great family. (He has grown to be a very beautiful, large, typey dog.)

We kept Bart!
