Day One 2011 Cabin Trip

We left the house at 7:15, and again at 7:20 (I had forgotten the power cord for my computer). Rainy weather through all of Pennsylvania. We are in Elkhart, Indiana, so have gotten through 3 states! Burgers for dinner. The animals are all antsy, so we’ll go walk them soon. Then, a good night’s sleep before we are off early tomorrow.

The Annual Migration

We are about to embark on our annual migration to our mountain cabin in Colorado. We drive about 20 minutes south to I80, then 1750 miles west to Laramie, Wyoming, then 40 minutes south to the cabin in Colorado. We know all the stops along the way (pee, eat, sleep). We will be taking the 3 dogs and 2 cats, and the whole routine is going smoother this year—we’ve had lots of practice.

I’ll try to blog along the way and at the cabin. But, if you really want to keep track of our adventures, be sure to follow Lynne’s blog at http://www.rickandlynne.com/lynne. She has turned it into a “membership only” blog because of the spammers and in order to know who is following her daily posts. Membership is easy, just send an email asking for membership and she’ll grant it. You will be rewarded by her fantastic photography and insightful commentary.

After Irene

Who would have thought that we’d be dealing with earthquakes and hurricanes when we moved to New Jersey? After a brief rumble last week that I felt at work, this weekend we dealt with Irene.

On Friday we had a great time at the Duchess County (NY) fair. I’m sure blog posts from both Lynne and me are coming. It was a sunny, warm, beautiful day.

Then on Saturday night, Irene powered through. We are in the “mountains” and a bit away from the coast, so did not have to worry about the flooding and storm surge. But, we got a lot of rain, about 7 inches during the storm (on already rain-soaked ground), and we’ve had a lot of wind. The big problem here is trees that blow down and take electric lines with them.

But, we had only a few brief electrical outages. No trees down (that we know of). And, other than dogs with cabin fever, we are in good shape.

Thanks to those of you who have called to ask about our situation—we are fine. Getting to work tomorrow, given the flood-prone regions I have to drive through, may be interesting. But, all is well and we are now preparing for our trek to Colorado for a vacation in September.

The “One Term” Party

I’m lobbying to create a new political party. There is already a “T” party, and I’d like to see an “OT” party. That stands for “one term”. Members could be liberal or moderate or conservative. They could be like me, socially liberal and fiscally conservative. It doesn’t matter, the diversity would benefit the party.

What makes this party unique is the pledge from each member running for a public office. The pledge that states they will serve only one term if elected, and not run for a subsequent term.

This would ensure we get people in office who use their skills, intellect, and beliefs to benefit their constituents and the country rather than their own egos and political careers.

If you were not motivated by the desire to be reelected, you might actually have the ability to do what is “best” even if it is not popular. A large group of OTs might be able to fix entitlements, cut budgets, raise taxes, and do the other obvious and necessary things that the current crop of career and ego motivated pols can’t do.
