My brother is starting to get into cheese making and he asked me if you could use a can that food comes in, like fruit or tomatoes etc. If you use the can opener that cuts outside and leaves no sharp edges. Do you think this would work one or two times. I know that they are metal but they had food in them in the first place. He was thinking for a brie, since I told him that people use spring form pans.
Any thoughts.

I’ve used food tins with the ends cut out and clingfilmed together as a follower for pressed cheese. wasn’t as easy to use as the proper mold but it worked ok. you just need another, smaller tin to stand on top so you’ve got something to press onto
There was talk that PVC gives off some chemical and shouldn’t be used for food. I don’t know how bad it is. I’ve also had a hard time finding a large diameter pieces of PVC.
Don’t know about the emitting of chemical. I bought a commercially made press which used PVC. As far as locating, your local plumber could probably fix you up with a piece of scrap 6”.
PVC is toxic their are many articles u can find on the net, its just not worth it to risk contamination. Those protein containers are very usefull that can be bought from health/grocery stores. Just drill holes in the sides then cut off the bottom (depending on how its formed).

I haven’t heard of PVC being toxic. But if it is, the whole world is in serious trouble - its the most common water pipe there is.
household water is copper pipes, grey water and sewage is PVC their is also food grade “PVC”/plastic pipes, but I have not seen it available at any hardware stores, at least were i live.
My household water pipes are PVC, white/cream colored. Hope I don’t develop a third eye. Most of the newer modulars are using PVC as well. They all have to be built to conform to building codes. I don’t worry about PVC as a problem. I’m more concerned with the produce that comes from Mexico with salmonella being sold in our grocery stores at present. That’s gonna kill you a lot quicker.

Are you sure it’s not cpvc? That’s what is used for potable water. The pure white ones are pvc.
