So my wife and I have been contemplating several different refrigerators for our cheese cave. We’re looking for a mini-style fridge to place in our kitchen next to our main fridge. I’m assuming most “normal” mini-fridges will work, but we found one with a glass door and decided to ask anyone here that had an opinion on it. My only concern I guess would be how insulated the glass door is?

Good to have you two aboard, and I’m hoping we can be of some help to you in your new venture.  I use a standard refrigerator (very used, discarded by someone else, and free) along with a thermostat, which is essential.  As to the insulation value of a glass door, it might be helpful to look at the energy rating of the particular unit you’re interested in.  Certainly it can’t be as efficient as a thicker, insulated door; but it may not make a tremendous difference.  Esthethically, the joy of seeing your creations every time you enter the kitchen might be worth the loss of a few cents a month in energy savings.  I can’t testify for everyone else; but I don’t make cheese because its cheaper - it’s NOT! - I make cheese because I enjoy it and it’s better.  So, indulge yourselves and make it as much pleasure as possible.

I have a similar fridge that was designed for drinks.  It seems to work very well.  I keep the temp at 52ish.  No problems so far.

Thanks for the reply you two! 9mmruger, have you see your fridge fluctuate in temperature at all? Would you mind (if it’s not a hassle) posting the manufacturer/model?

Thanks!

Here is a pix of my fridge.  I don’t have the model number with me at work.  I got it from ABC warehouse, if I remember correctly.  It was the floor model and the last one that they had.  I have a clip on thermometer which stays pretty constant for me, running it at the lowest setting I can, highest temp.

I was just looking at a slightly used wine refrigerator online on craigslist.  Does anybody use a wine refrigerator for aging?
