I know what you mean.  My meter went out on me and I was at a real loss.  I can’t imagine making cheese without it like I used to.

I have no experience with the Extech, so I’m not the one to recommend.  I’ve been using a Hanna Checker, which is rather low end but quite sufficient for my needs.
