I am new here, and I am trying to ease into the cheese world with a book that can advise me on all the basics. I am about to have a glut of fresh goat’s milk and am very excited to start with some soft cheeses but perhaps move into some more complex harder ones soon too. Any suggestions? As a small back-story, I was at the cheese-supply store yesterday, and realized right before I bought a “starter kit” for like $75 and a $25 book, I’d like to hear from people who are actually doing it…so here I am!
thanks!

Welcome to the forum.  Always good to have more input.  I just got back from the dairy where I picked up 5 gal of fresh milk, so I know how you feel with fresh milk available.

When I started I bought Ricki Carroll’s book, “Home Cheesemaking.”  Its been a good basic book, and there should be enough recipes in it to keep you going for quite a while.  Also, check out the recipe section of this site for some favorites posted by our cheese-a-holics.

When you get to actually making cheese, feel free to hit us with your questions.  Its the best way to learn.

Again, welcome.

Here is a free download book.

I’ve found it helpful for general information
I’m a complete newcomer, and have found this forum very helpful, but the basics are best read from a book I think- we don’t want to appear TOTALLY ignorant when we ask questions on this site!
