Where the Antelope Play

The other day we went on a drive to take some photos for Lynne’s blog, and to try to find an antelope that we could “shoot” with the high-speed camera. I learned that nature photography is a lot harder than it might seem. You need to find the subject in a good location, you need nice light, and you need to be in the right place at the right time. The previous day, we saw dozens of antelope. On this day, only a few and using the rig shown here, we got the movie below.

The thing about filming antelope running, is I suspect they will always be running away and thus one gets lots of nice antelope butt footage. We’ll try again next week wink

Bella Running in Slow Mo

Here is Bella coming at me full steam. This movie is actually of 1 second of real time.

And, here she is another time.

I’ll try to get more of these—and of the other dogs—and post them soon.

Shot with a Phantom Miro M320S, handheld. I had no viewfinder or monitor so I was just pointing it at the dog wink

Memorial Day Arrival

We arrived, safe and sound, early in the afternoon on Memorial Day. We spent the last night on the road in Grand Island, NE at a Rodeway Inn that we like. The weather there was a bit scary in the evening, but all was well. We were up early and on the road around 6:00 a.m.

We fought strong winds all the way across Nebraska, and then picked up a headwind on Monday. Gas mileage was terrible. We had lunch at Taco John’s in Cheyenne and we were in Laramie by noon. As usual, we did a quick shopping trip to get what we need for 3-4 days. Then, we’ll come back into town for a “big shop” and get what we need for a week or more.

At the cabin around 1:00 p.m. A little over 32 hours of time on the road (excluding motel time), and about 1822 miles. The dogs went crazy running around and barking! It takes a while to get everything unpacked. Then, I turn on the water, propane, hot water heater, etc. of course, the satellite Internet was not working, so that takes an hour to resolve. Finally, I reactivate the TV and all the gadgets are working.

We did chuck wagon sandwiches for dinner. And, we went to bed quite early.

This morning, I was up around 5:30 because the dogs were antsy. I fed them, started some coffee and made some bran muffins. We took the dogs for a short walk. It was breezy and quite chilly. When we got home from that, I set up the M320S camera pointed at a hummingbird feeder and got a few shots - some are really good. After that it was time for a shower and lunch and a nap wink

Some neighbors stopped by to say “hi” and now that they’ve left I am taking the time to write down these notes.
Lynne just made a frozen dessert pie for tonight. We’ll have Bob’s Oven Fried Chicken with sweet corn for dinner. Yum.

There are not as many wildflowers as I’d hope for yet. It is still a bit early and, there aren’t many creatures around—even birds. The weather is now cloudy and there is a cold breeze. So, Lynne has kept a fire going low all day. We won’t get a full charge from the PV system today.

I guess that is it for now. More later.

Here is the track we took.

Annual Migration

I am terrible at maintaining this blog. But, we are about to embark on our annual migration from New Jersey to Colorado, and I hope to have time to blog each day. Looking back, it was not that long ago I documented last year’s trip!

Lynne has kicked things off with a great introductory post here:

On Saturday, Lynne, me, three dogs and two cats will head west on I80 and drive about 1700 miles, turn left, and be there.
