Recipe Site Upgrade

I’ve significantly upgraded the recipe site. The recipe search capabilities are much improved as is the user interface. Check it out by clicking on “Our Favorite Recipes” in the links on the right-hand side of the page. Site membership is still required to view recipes.

Avalon Aviary

On Memorial Day, Lynne, her mother, and I had the opportunity to visit a local aviary. It is owned and operated by Susanne Cochran, a friend and work colleague. We met her at her store in Loveland, Colorado and later drove to her house where she has her aviary.

She gave us a wonderful tour. We got to see many birds (Amazon Parrots, Caiques, Eclectus Parrots, a variety of Macaws, and more!). Susanne also showed us a baby Caiques and we got to see her feed the baby. She showed us a couple of her favorites including one parrot that talked, another that gave kisses (or, at least made sloppy kissing noises), and a rare Hyacinth Macaw.

Susanne thinks she has about 120 birds right now. She has 40 breeding pairs that we were not able to see (who blames them?) Maybe lots of babies coming later?

Anyway, you really should visit her web site. She offers great descriptions and photos of most of her birds. She also has an online store for bird supplies. Or, if you live in Northern Colorado, visit her store on West Highway 34 where it crosses the Big Thompson river.

Lynne fell in love with the Caiques.

I’m Losing Things (Maybe My Sanity)

This weekend I lost some things. Maybe it is age catching up to me? I lost (or, at least can’t find): a knee brace (yes, the knee is going again); a quart of hydraulic fluid for the log splitter, and a pen tablet for my computer.

Let me know if you find them.

How to do Everything

Well, okay, maybe “many” things.

The other day I was looking for hints on ways that I might fix some woodwork that has dog claw scratches on it and found this website. There are thousands of “how to” articles. And, each has comments from people on what works and what doesn’t as well as alternative ways to accomplish something.

Check it out!

By the way, here is the article on how to repair scratches.

Recycle Your Old Cell Phone

If you are like me, you have a drawer at home with old unused cell phones in it. Don’t throw them away! They are very harmful to the environment. Instead, get a few dollars from them by going to oldcellphone.com.

They will send you appropriate packaging for your phone and pay for the shipping. They then attempt to reuse your old phone—often for charitable purposes.

By the way, if you want to learn more about recycling and disposal alternatives for other stuff ranging from chemicals to computers to used motor oil, visit Earth 911. Enter your zip code and learn about local resources to help you recycle, reuse, or properly dispose of many items that could be damaging to the environment. You have to click quite a few times, digging deeper and deeper into the site to get to a list of resources, but it is easy and intuitive.
