Busy Week

It has been a busy week. My mother flew out to visit us for Memorial Day. The weather was awful--rainy and cold. She flew from El Paso to Houston with the plan to take a plane from there to Newark where we'd pick her up on Thursday evening. Her flight into Newark was canceled because of the weather here, and she was rerouted to San Francisco and from there to Newark! She arrived on Friday morning very tired. But, as she said, she'd seen three oceans in one day!

That first weekend was cold and rainy and we even had fires in the fireplace on a couple of nights.

Then the weather improved and we were able to get out and about.

On Sunday we did a food tour of NOLITA in New York City. We barbequed on Memorial Day. We visited the 911 Memorial Site during the week. We took a few drives, cooked good food, hung out around the newly opened pool and generally had a great time. On her last day here we went to Warwick Valley Vineyards for a tasting and lunch.

All in all, a great visit.

She is now home having taken uneventful flights yesterday. And, I assume she is settling back into her normal routine.

The Ultimate Internet Video

Finally, the ultimate justification for the existence of the Internet and YouTube. A cat dressed as a shark, riding a Roomba, chasing a duckling, with a cameo appearance by a dog in costume. This one has it all.

NAB 2013

Was at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas last week. We "pre-introduced" the Phantom Flex4K--a 4K camera capable of 1000 frames-per-second acquisition at the DCI 4K spec of 4096x2160. It was a hit!

A pre-introduction means that final feature set, specifications and pricing is not set, but that the camera program is far enough along that we were able to show a nice demo reel and reveal the top-line capabilities. You can follow the development program throughout the summer by following @PhantomFlex4K on Twitter or PhantomFlex4K on FaceBook as well as on the VRI blog at http://www.visionresearch.com

The demo reel was shot with two cameras that had been built and turned-on for the first time two weeks prior. Here it is:

Vinyl

A couple of weeks ago, Lynne and I were spending some time in the basement going through some of the boxes of stuff down there. We've been trying to spend an hour or two a week going through "yours, mine, and ours" stuff. Oh, and stuff from Mom Monroe, too.

We stumbled across a box of vinyl 33rpm LP albums. I decided it would be a good idea to record all of them digitally. So, I went onto Amazon and bought an Audio-Technica turntable with USB output. I hooked up to my MBP and installed Audacity software. Now, I am sitting here recording Billy Joel's "The Stranger". Over the past week I recorded a couple of old John Denver albums, too. The dates on these are around 1977! And, so far they are in great shape.

I save them as AIFF files and can then import them into iTunes where I can load them onto the iPod and have this great music available in the car, by the pool, or on the Bose player we have in the house.

Next up is a George Winston album from 1981. And, there is a box of probably a hundred more downstairs.
