1 September 2010
Swam tonight. Maybe the last time this season. 73° water, just about the bottom end of tolerable. Cicadas still scratching, but summer is coming to an end. The days have been hot and humid, but a hurricane is coming this way to bring some rain. And, wind is likely of course.
We take Bella for OFA X-rays tomorrow. And, it is time to say goodbye to Vincent.
In two weeks we head to Colorado. Can’t wait.

Anne-Lise, the daughter of our dear friends from France was here last weekend. She was a delight. We had fun with a food tour of Greenwich Village in Manhattan (“on” Manhattan?), a morning at the Warwick market, but also a lot of swimming. It was hot, hot, hot. We’ve had some rain, hot days, high humidity. Cicadas are scritching.

Cicadas got into the act last night with a dozen or so chattering away. I’ve been gone for a couple of nights, but this was the first night I heard them do their chatter instead of a single long string of buzzing. A few fireflies lingered in the trees too, but I think we have definitely made the transition from Spring to Summer. Hot, hot, hot and hot again today. The pool will feel good after a quick trip into Warwick in Mia for breakfast and the market. Hot chicken wings for lunch and a new BLT salad for dinner tonight, yum.

The big “Thunder in the Highlands” fireworks display, rescheduled for the 9th because of a supposedly rogue bear, still did not take place because of dry weather. On the 10th, it rained 2.3 inches here at the house!
The bear story is sad. The official story is that a bear in the old Jungle Habitat grounds pushed a man to the ground and mauled his dog while they were taking a walk. This caused the whole park area to be closed and the fireworks postponed. They caught and killed the bear letting “nature take it course” (an actual quote) on the 3 cubs left behind. We suspect the man was walking the dog off lead, the dog (perhaps just out of curiosity) chased or got too close to a cub and mama bear did her protective thing. Sad to kill an animal and leave her three cubs to die naturally in the wild just because she was doing what come naturally and what any mother would do to protect her children from a perceived threat.
Canoe out early this a.m. Now headed to Warwick for the Sunday market in Mia.
