Moose at the Cabin
Several weeks ago, we had visitors at the cabin. It was about 7:30 p.m. and I was reading a book. I set the book down and looked across the cabin and out our bedroom window—and saw a moose walking by!
Lynne had never seen the moose up there and so I grabbed her, whispered “MOOSE!”, (well, maybe not a whisper), and pulled her out onto the front porch, closing the door behind me. Luckily, none of the dogs knew what was going on.
It was a cow and calf headed for our salt lick. They walked so close to the cabin porch we could have reached out and touched them!
They stayed at the salt lick for a long time. The calf was not interested and explored the area, but if he got too far away, mom would call him back.
Then, they left for a while. Uuumph, Uuumph, is the noise they made. But, after about 15 minutes, they were back again!
Seeing the moose and watching them for about 1/2 hour was very exciting.

These two visited us again last weekend. On Saturday evening about 5:00 a couple of the dogs that were on the cabin porch started barking. We looked out the front windows and there was the mom standing about half-way between the salt lick and the cabin, and junior was at the salt lick. He has really grown! He is quite a bit bigger now, and much darker in color. And, he has started to grow a main of hair on his shoulders.
They stuck around a few minutes but I think the noise of the dogs (and of us trying to quiet the dogs) drove them away. They slowly walked down into the valley —grunting—and disappeared.
