Avalon Aviary
On Memorial Day, Lynne, her mother, and I had the opportunity to visit a local aviary. It is owned and operated by Susanne Cochran, a friend and work colleague. We met her at her store in Loveland, Colorado and later drove to her house where she has her aviary.
She gave us a wonderful tour. We got to see many birds (Amazon Parrots, Caiques, Eclectus Parrots, a variety of Macaws, and more!). Susanne also showed us a baby Caiques and we got to see her feed the baby. She showed us a couple of her favorites including one parrot that talked, another that gave kisses (or, at least made sloppy kissing noises), and a rare Hyacinth Macaw.
Susanne thinks she has about 120 birds right now. She has 40 breeding pairs that we were not able to see (who blames them?) Maybe lots of babies coming later?
Anyway, you really should visit her web site. She offers great descriptions and photos of most of her birds. She also has an online store for bird supplies. Or, if you live in Northern Colorado, visit her store on West Highway 34 where it crosses the Big Thompson river.
Lynne fell in love with the Caiques.

Wild Mushroom Gallery
Just a quick notice that I’m turning on a wild mushroom photo gallery site. Most of the photos will be of mushrooms that Lynne and I (and the dogs) find around our mountain cabin. I’ve posted a couple of dozen photos from last year just to get it started and will post photos throughout the mushroom season this year.
You can find the site by going here or, you can click on the link under “Links to My Other Websites” on the home page of this site.
Hope you enjoy. And, as always, feel free to comment.

Hailey Loves Winter
Now that we are well into Spring, I often think back to the snow of Winter. When I think of snow, I think of our puppy, Hailey, who really loves snow. The snow at the cabin is gone now, but just a few weekends ago there was still enough snow to make Hailey happy!
Here are a couple of online movies to show you what I mean:
Another of Hailey’s favorite things is finding sticks in the woods and carrying them home to chew on. Here she is tackling a really big stick.

Alex is Good and Normal
We just got back the results of Alex’s hip and elbow x-rays as evaluated by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. It was very good news. His hips are “Good” and his elbows are “Normal”. This means that he is a candidate for breeding, although we have no plans. We do plan to continue to show him to his AKC Championship.

More on Wildflowers
There was so much interest in my (not yet completed and probably never will be) wildflower site, that I’ve decided to start an image gallery of wildflowers starting this Spring. You can find it here. (Meantime, I’ve decommissioned the old site.)
I’ll add flowers each week or two throughout the season to document the type and timing of wildflowers at the cabin.
Feel free to visit often. And, add comments if you want.
