Hailey the Huntress

Okay, I’m giving you fair warning; this blog entry is not for the faint of heart. Animals lovers BEWARE. EXPLICIT PHOTO ATTACHED OF DEAD ANIMAL. You can’t say I didn’t warn you. Now it’s your own fault if you read any further. Hailey has caught another

chipmunk

baby squirrel [thanks, Andy]. This makes three so far since we moved in. I have no idea how she is quick enough to catch them, but catch them she does and brings them right up on the deck by the door. She has placed them in the same spot all three times. I have observed her just sitting or laying in the woods staring intently at at one spot. Waiting. Hoping. It obviously works. This morning I was sitting and reading in the sun room when I noticed her by the sliding door wanting to come in. She was acting kind of funny, so I got up to let her in and she decided to come around to the other sliding door. When I let her in she was walking all slunk down real low so I knew she had done something wrong. She always acts guilty if she thinks she’s been bad. I glanced out, and sure enough, there was her “present” to me. A poor little

chipmunk

baby squirrel; dead, but still warm. At least she didn’t mangle it because it looked like it had been carried very gently in her mouth. The last time she caught one some of my friends asked me why I didn’t take a photo of it. So, this time I decided to to do just that since it looks like it’s just sleeping.

I understand that the hunter gene runs in the family on her mother’s side, and that her mother and grandmother both were hunters [or should I say huntresses?]. So, I guess I can’t get too mad at her for just carrying on in the family tradition. Here is the chipmunk, and here you have Hailey the Huntress.

ACK…Humidity!

Okay. Finally, today, the humidity has caught up with me. Ewww…sticky! Today we woke up to semi-cloudy skies. By the time I set off for the Wayne area to do some shopping and to meet up with Rick, it was kind of ominous looking. I went into BJ’s (like a Sam’s club) and five minutes later the sky literally opened up! The rain on the roof was astounding, plus thunder! It was typical of a high humidity day. Smudgy, yellowish sky with sporadic rain on and off. When we got home and sat on our deck, my first thought was that I needed to clean my contact lenses because there was a film on them. HELLO! I haven’t worn contacts since Lasik surgery five years ago! Yet, that is exactly what it looked like. It was hazy and almost foggy. Very weird. The dogs drink tons more water than they ever did in Colorado. They pant more. Ice in glasses melts quicker and the glasses bead up and drip with moisture. Coasters under glasses are very much a necessity rather than a convenience. I haven’t encountered this much humidity since I don’t know when. I think it was around 85% and the temperature was around 80 at its highest point today. The locals say “you ain’t seen nothing yet, wait till August.” At least we have the pool to cool off in then! And to all a sticky good-night!

Another Visit with Johnny

Johnny and I had another visit today. It went much better than the first time, and I think that’s because I am more comfortable now. What? You don’t know who Johnny is? Shame on you; you haven’t been reading my blog! You’ll be glad to know I only used third gear and it didn’t seem fast at all. Something sweet-smelling is blooming right now, and I kept catching whiffs of it here and there. Nice day today, but rain is moving in for later this evening and tomorrow. Boy, it’s quite a challenge to figure out the best way to mow around all those trees in the front yard. [Note to self: Before mowing next time, pick up ALL fallen branches in the yard FIRST.] Here is the side front yard, and the main front yard as seen from standing in our driveway looking away from the house.
