Snow Shadow

Lynne Robinson, Hewitt, New Jersey

I love seeing a tree’s shadow on snow. Somehow it’s stronger, sharper, more clear than just on plain ground. This is a sight I doubt I’ll be seeing again this year. This photo was taken a mere three days ago, and now that snow that helped cast such a wonderful shadow is gone. Melted away with the near 60 degree temperatures we’ve had this week and the ever strengthening rays of the almost-spring-sun.

Not only will I not see snow shadows anymore, but soon the tree will be wearing its new leafy green garb that conceals its true shape. No longer will its limbs be bare for all the world to see. It will not be casting this same shadow again until next year.

The birds are saying it’s time to move on too. I wake up to their sweet, varied songs every morning. Just yesterday I saw the little fox sparrow, my very own spring predictor, back scratching around at my feeding station again. He’s late this year. I’ve not seen any robins as yet. When we lived in Colorado the robins were full time residents, but here they leave for the winter.

This weekend we are expecting between 2 and 4 inches of rain! That’s a lot of water. They say that if it were snow it would be three or four feet! I’ll be glad for the water this time instead of snow. At least I don’t have to shovel it!

I do believe spring is on it’s way!

What a difference a week makes

Well, it looks like an entire week has gone by since I last posted. Some things have changed.

Our big snow storm seems like a dim memory now except for all the slushy snow that is still left. Our deck is grateful that it’s melting. The forsythia hedge is springing back (mostly) although it does have quite a few broken branches. The burning bushes in front of the house seem to be very resilient as well. Once the snow is gone we have some major yard clean-up to do with all the big branches that came down.

But ...

The birds are singing in the morning, the squirrels are chasing each other around and around the tree trunks and it go up to 52 degrees with sun this weekend! The air feels different. I think we may have turned the corner towards spring at last. The turkeys are back out walking around too. The other day I saw Bella at the edge of the yard staring into the woods. When I went out I heard flapping noises and squawks. The silly turkeys were airborne and sitting in the trees! Now, mind you, they don’t fly very well at all and are very clumsy off the ground. I have no idea what they were doing, but they kept flop-flying from tree to tree.

My favorite little bird of all is the Carolina Wren. Such a beautiful repertoire of songs! I’m glad they’ve decided to make their home around my house.

Also adding joy and beauty around my house are my Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter cacti. Both these cacti are blooming now but they have very different blooms. Beautiful just the same. The first one is a very old cactus that was started from my paternal grandmother’s. It reminds me of a Chinese pagoda.

I got quite a surprise as well when I trimmed back the dying leaf fronds of my amaryllis. A new bud was breaking out of the bulb! This amaryllis was given to me by my neighbor two years ago and this will be the second time it’s bloomed for me. Amazing. It’s not quite out yet, but here it is the first year.

And speaking of differences that one week can make, take a look at the wheel of Blue Cheese that Rick made last week.

Here is the same cheese one week later once the molds have started to take over. Amazing, is it not?

Sounds of the neighborhood and other musings

Lynne Robinson, Hewitt, New Jersey

It’s been gray/rainy/foggy and cool this week. Typically fall. Our mushroom foray that was rescheduled for today was put on hold for yet another week. It would seem the mushrooms are reluctant to make an appearance. So instead we visited Bed, Bath & Beyond and bought new bed pillows, sheets, and towels. The washer and dryer are working overtime getting them all ready for use. Well, not the pillows of course. (Did I mention the dryer is fixed? Well, mostly. It still needs a new belt which will be installed on Monday, but at least it’s usable.)

I just now stepped out on my deck because I heard the Carolina Wren singing its sweet song. It actually prompted me to write this entry. Such a cool bird to have around and it has so many different tunes it can sing! My neighbor’s rooster was crowing too, and every once in a while the sheep chime in with their cute baaaa…baaaa…baaaa‘s. My neighbor told me that they will be bred this fall so we’ll have more sheepy noises to come. I told her we’d love to have some milk to make cheese from but I don’t know if that will happen or not. It’s complicated. There will be wool though from the shearing. (Not that I would know what to do with it!)

There is also the very loud thwack! sound of acorns (or maybe it’s the other large nut-like things that have been falling this year) hitting the deck of my neighbors across the street. The rustling of tree leaves and limbs can also be heard as the squirrels busily run to and fro with their nutty booty.

Even though the trees are not showing much color as yet, fall has arrived. And maybe, just maybe, I’m out of my blut.

Well look-ee here!

Lynne Robinson, Hewitt, New Jersey

Yesterday there were six robins in my front yard pecking the newly exposed ground. What a welcome sight they were! Robins in Colorado were no big deal since they wintered there, but here in New Jersey they find a warmer climate to spend the colder months. You know spring is on the way when the robins return.

Remember that old song?

When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along, along
There’ll be no more sobbin’ when he starts throbbin’ his old sweet song
Wake up, wake up you sleepy head
Get up, get out of your bed
Cheer up, cheer up the sun is red
Live, love, laugh and be happy

De-Christmas-ized ramblings

Lynne Robinson, Hewitt, New Jersey

There is something very sad about Christmas decorations after Christmas is over with. Just look at these reindeer in my neighbor’s yard down the street. They’ve keeled over from the stress of it all, while the one left standing looks on forlornly. I’m afraid there is no rescue for these poor little reindeer if last year is any indication. (Last year they left them up until Easter.) Take them down, put them away, and get on with life after Christmas folks!

We certainly did. On Sunday the tree and all the trimmings came down and got packed up and put away. The living room looks naked without the bedecked tree but we’ll get used to it. It’s nice to have the house back to normal again. A fresh, clean house to start the new year with.

As for the weather, it bounces back and forth. We had a bit of snow on New Year’s Eve which is still around in spotty bits, but right now it’s raining. At least I think it is but it’s too dark outside to really tell. I think it’s freezing rain. That is something I can’t quite get used to. Here it is 31 degrees F and it’s raining instead of snowing. I can see icicles and a good coating of ice on the deck’s railings. Yuck. When it gets lighter I will try and get some photos if it’s worthwhile. But by the time it’s bright enough outside to take photos the ice will probably be melting. We’ll see.

I think canoeing is out of the question, don’t you? Green Turtle Pond now belongs to the ice fishermen.

As for me, I am feeling pretty much back to normal thank goodness. Still coughing some but it’s a dry cough instead of the one I did have.

How is Bella doing, you might ask. She’s doing just great. Growing like a weed in rich soil. She weighs in at 50 pounds now at 4 months of age. I think she’s going to be a big girl. I can’t even write about her misadventures much anymore because she’s turned into a little angel. She’s really a very good puppy. Well, most of the time. She still has her moments. Like when I just now tried to take her photo and she started barking at me.

Poor thing. I just let her out to pee and it’s so icy out there her legs went in every direction trying to squat. I can see now that everything is coated with ice. Lovely.

Did I tell you that I saved a bird’s life the other day? We came home from running errands and saw Sam staring intently at a female downy woodpecker just sitting in the snow on the other side of the glass door. I knew just what to do as I’ve done it many times before when we’ve had birds stunned from flying into the glass. I put my gloves on and went out and picked her up. At first she tried to fly, but couldn’t. She soon settled down in my cupped hands, turning her head this way and that looking at me. I stroked her feathers every so lightly, trying to warm her up. After a while I opened my hands and she still just sat there. I was hoping she wasn’t hurt internally when all of a sudden she took flight. Hurray!

With the nasty weather outside I’ve decided not to go anywhere today. I am going to make this Irish stew this afternoon, complete with cheddar scones. Just the meal for a day like today, don’t you agree?
