And adorable! We have a huge population of both ground squirrels and their littler cousins, chipmunks.
They are pretty smart about gaining access to the two bird feeders we have out. This year every time I look out expecting to see birds in the feeders I see ground squirrels or chipmunks instead.
Amazingly, they can climb this pole!
Getting up is one thing, but getting down is not as easy as it would seem.
Our other bird feeder is surrounded by baby aspens. Since it’s impossible for them to climb up the pole and get into this feeder, they’ve learned to climb the little trees and take a flying leap! Rick finally got this in slow motion yesterday and here is the clip. Enjoy!

My thoughts
Squirrels are abundant around here too and I have a chipmunk living in the spillway under my driveway. He rarely makes an appearance but, when he does, he’s too quick to capture!
Awesome video! The squirrels out West are way cuter than the NC squirrels. I call them tree rats and they are are tough to keep out of the feeders. The dogs like to chase them, tho. We let Sookie tree one the other day, but then she trampled the coleuses we have planted at the base of the tree trying to get at him.The squirrel wins again.

I saw my first chipmunk in the wild in Toronto last June. It was darting about Peter’s brothers garden. They also have lots of black squirrels visiting the garden. I love to watch them from a distance but don’t like them getting too close!
