more Morels

More! Morels! Rick mowed the little piece of grass that I can’t reach with Johnny yesterday and found these:

A grandfather and grandson! Just growing in the grass, but adjacent to the flower bed where we found their “cousin” growing last week. Look how little the small one is next to my finger.

In this photo you can see how far apart they are growing from each other. See them? Big morel at the bottom of the photo; little one at the top in a direct line.

And, yes, we will be eating them ... soon.

These mushrooms were found growing in the backyard. I’m sure they have a name but we normally call this kind SBMs (small brown mushrooms). In other words, too hard to classify. No. We won’t be eating these.

As a side note: I sincerely hope no one was too upset by my “Morel” of the story the other day. My sister and Rick both found the story touching and sad. I guess my short story was a hit since I made my readers feel sympathy for a poor little mushroom!

Comments:

So exactly how big are those big morels? The poor little fella you ate looks HUGE compared to your body.  I’ve never eaten…nor even seen a morel and can’t imagine how hungry the first person to eat one had to be in order to taste that funny looking thing!

I loved looking in your yard and hearing the story of how you found your little piece of heaven.

Wow, they’re so weird looking, aren’t they? As if they came from outer space.

Very cool that you would even notice them.

Bon appetit!

beautiful, beautiful pictures and how I LOVE mushrooms!!  too bad I can never hunt for them without an expert—every time I think, “oh that’s edible” the expert says, “uh, that one will make you vomit blood” and when I say, “oh, that one looks POISONOUS” the expert says, “here, take a bite, this is a good one”

LOVE mushrooms, but no knowledge is a dangerous thing for me

Susan, they aren’t very big. The first one was about two inches tall. The big one in this post was about four I think. Delicious, too! The baby was not quite the size of my pinkie finger.

Reya, yes very weird looking!

bp, thank you! Yes, the poisonous ones can look very benign, but can also be very ugly. Can’t tell by looking! One should always use extreme caution with mushrooms. We have only ever eaten about three different wild varieties and only after making certain we were sure about what kind they were.

No, it’s too much! You have bears AND morels!  I have never ever found one, and they do grow over here.  We have just watched your little bear film, and are suitably impressed. Or, as Andy put it ‘crazy!’
