Asia looks out over her domain.
At the end of half-mile long Crab Apple Allée at Skylands, the statues of the four continents (Asia, Africa, America and Europe) stand guard.
Asia fascinates me from every angle. There is just something about her that draws me in.
Is it her worn features?
Or is it her missing limb?
Haunting.
Do you find her creepy or interesting?

Well, I’m going to have to go with creepy. I think its got something to do with that missing limb and that spider web sitting between her ear and shoulder. Just back from a wild Wildwood week so I’m catching up on your photos and enjoying what I have missed. Re. Craigs List…my DIL has had the same experience. People are RUDE! Happy weekend!

Helene, yes I kind of agree with you. At first I was going to name this post Faceless and Soulless but I thought that might be a bit too much. That’s how she appears to me. Hope you had a wild time in Wildwood. I’ve not been down on the shore that far.
Steve, Skylands in northern NJ, about 5 or 6 miles from where I live. Here is their site : http://www.njbg.org and here is a map showing where it is located: http://www.njbg.org/directions.shtml
It’s free admission during the week which makes it a great place to go.

Creepy - do you know what happened to her missing limb?

Yes, creepy all around I guess. Yet no one said they liked the photos! Maybe it was a success after all because when I took the photos I was going for, well, kind of creepy.
Joyce, no, no idea where she left her arm, (so to speak). The statues have only been in place since 1930 or so.

I think she just looks very sad and lonely - like she’s waiting and watching for something that’s never going to come. She reminds of a woman waiting on a widow’s walk watching for a ship that’s never going to arrive. Interesting that the back of the statue looks like it’s in better shape than the front of the statue but that might be because there’s no close up of the back. Are the other statues (Africa, America, Europe) in the same condition?

C, I think the back of the statue looks better because it is more sheltered from the weather by lot of trees. ? Europe has lost most of his facial features as well, with America and Africa being in the best of shape. I didn’t spend as much time with them since I didn’t find them as interesting. Maybe I’ll go back and take a second look.
