True North

Lynne Robinson, New Jersey

Our cabin pulls us back like a malfunctioning compass, insisting that for us, west is the true north. Our souls resonate with those 70+ acres of rolling sage-covered high prairie hills. The deep gullies filled with aspen and pine. Bart’s Creek (named after our Bernese Mountain Dog Bart who loved the water) that runs in the spring. The beaver pond where Bella loves to “swim.”  The meadows where columbine and lupine grow. The moose, deer, and elk that sometimes grace our land with their presence. (Although the free-range cattle that also “grace our land” are unwanted visitors.) The coyote serenades at night. The Milky Way shining brightly in the night sky. The cabin made of hand trimmed logs. It’s part of us. Part of who we are.

And next week this time we’ll be arriving about now after three days on the road cooped up with three dogs and two cats and a packed Suburban full of all the necessities.  We’re on countdown now ...

Comments:

Wish I could find MY true north and someone to share it with!

Carolyn,  I wish that for you too!

Sounds a wonderful place to be and how great to be able to take the whole family!

Joyce, that’s the beauty of it: everyone gets to go! The dogs love being off leash—they are so good.

It sounds so wonderful…can I go, too? I will be the nanny, okay?
I’m being silly and selfish because I will miss talking with you a couple times a week :(

Bigsis, sure you can come too. Be aware that you will have to sleep on the sofa that makes into a bed and the whole cabin is all one big room (except for the bathroom). No privacy there. And of course that means you will probably have at least two dogs and one cat sleeping with you. Then when friends Phil and Linda come to stay the night you will have to sleep on the screened-in porch with a sleeping bag while they take over the sofa bed. Still sound good? smile

Well…..it does sound a tad tiny for all of us. Plus, I could only handle sleeping with one dog at night—Alex—so of course, the other cats and dogs would be jealous and I wouldn’t want that. Oh well. It was a nice idea for about five minutes. haha!

Bigsis, I’m afraid if you were sleeping on the sofa bed you wouldn’t have a choice of which (or only one) dog being up there with you! I knew you would come to that conclusion that it sounded better than it actually was!

Can I come too??  You know I don’t care how many dogs or cats I sleep with - the more the merrier.  Of course, I do snore!  I’m afraid you would be more miserable than I would!

Good grief, now it’s really getting crowded! wink
